Deep Dive
Term One Unit One: Energy and Cellular Metabolism
The first semester opens with lessons on organic matter consumption and energy flow. Unit one contains two lessons: the first covers how the body extracts energy from food—specifically glucose, fats, and proteins. Pr Ayyoub explains the focus is glucose metabolism and ATP synthesis, leaving other carbohydrate types for university study. The second lesson in this unit examines muscle contractions and how muscles use that extracted energy to move. He illustrates the concept by asking how the body converts chemical energy into kinetic energy—how we lift objects, exercise, and perform physical work. Together these lessons form the foundation for understanding cellular respiration and mechanical energy production.
Term One Unit Two: Genetics and Inheritance
The second unit in term one introduces genetic information and its transmission across generations through sexual reproduction. It contains four chapters. Chapter one defines what genetic information is—the DNA molecule inside the cell nucleus—and addresses the basic question of how inherited traits like eye color, height, and facial features are determined. Chapter two examines the mechanism of gene expression: how DNA as a chemical compound transforms into observable traits. Pr Ayyoub walks through examples like hair color, skin tone, skeletal structure, and other phenotypic characteristics controlled by genetic information. Chapter three covers inheritance patterns: how genetic material passes from parents to offspring during sexual reproduction, examining why siblings can look similar to one parent, the other parent, both, or neither. Chapter four presents Mendelian and Morganian laws—mathematical rules that predict inheritance outcomes based on parental genotypes.
Assessment Structure and Second Term Preview
Unlike 2BAC SVT (which has three exams), 2BAC PC students take only two exams in term one, each worth 75% of their continuous grade. The remaining 25% comes from classroom activities, notebook quality, participation, and behavior as assessed by the teacher. Pr Ayyoub notes that 2BAC SVT has three exams by comparison. For term two content, he defers detailed explanation to a future video to keep this overview concise. He emphasizes that all curriculum content—lessons, applied exercises, practice exams, past papers, and activities—are already detailed on his channel with complete breakdowns organized by lesson and chapter. The archive grows yearly as new content is added, giving students comprehensive resources to supplement his lectures.
